Education Officer with responsibility for Mathematics, in the Ministry of Education, Technological and Vocational Training, Wendy Griffith, is looking forward to more involvement by primary and secondary schools in the activities to mark International Day of Mathematics, come next year.
She disclosed this today as she described the quality of the work currently on display at the “Mathematics Village”, in the auditorium of the Media Resource Department (MRD), as “excellent” to mark International Day of Mathematics, March 14.
Expressing pleasure at the first showing by both primary and secondary schools, she said: “I would like to thank all schools which have participated in this inaugural celebration of the day by Barbados and for including their work in our “Mathematics Village” here at the Ministry.”
Noting that the exhibition includes some video and digital submissions from schools, Mrs. Griffith added: “I look forward to next year being even bigger and better. I would like to encourage all schools across the island to start planning for next year’s event.”
While acknowledging that the theme Mathematics Unites was apt, the Education Officer made an appeal to Maths teachers to make children more excited about the subject. “Let us unite in our efforts to rekindle within our students that joy of doing Mathematics!” she urged.
Among the secondary schools participating in the exhibition are: St. Leonard’s Boys’; Alexandra; Graydon Sealy; Combermere and Springer Memorial.
At the primary level, these include: Blackman and Gollop; Welches; St. Elizabeth; Wesley Hall; Codrington School; The International School of Barbados, and People’s Cathedral.
