A national soil sampling survey will be carried out across the island from this week and will end on Friday, July 28.
It will be conducted by three government departments, through the Caribbean Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Multi-country Soil Management Initiative for Integrated Landscape Restoration and Sustainable Food Systems Phase I (CSIDS-SOILCARE Phase I) Project.
They are the Natural Heritage Department in the Ministry of Environment and National Beautification, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Nutritional Security’s Soil Conservation Unit and the Lands and Surveys Department in the Ministry of Housing, Lands and Maintenance.
Personnel from these agencies will be collecting the samples, which will be analysed and the results used to update national soil information and data, as a basis for strengthening land degradation neutrality and sustainable land and soil management processes.
To date, soil samples have been collected from various locations within the Barbados National Park/Scotland District for baseline measurements.
CSIDS-SOILCARE Phase I, which was launched in Barbados on October 26, 2022, is a regional project in which eight countries are participating. They are Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Belize, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, and St. Lucia.
