The Fire Cadet Programme experience will be enhanced with the addition of a drum corps, to provide the teenagers with a “new avenue of discipline and self-expression”.
This was revealed by Chief Fire Officer, Errol V. Maynard, at the recent Fire Cadet Passing Out Parade, at the Barbados Fire Academy, Arch Hall, St Thomas.
“The drum corps would be a source of pride for the cadets and inspiration of others in the community and for others to join the programme. At the heart of everything we do, is a simple yet profound mission, to nurture and develop better citizens for our nation.
“Through the Cadet Programme, we have striven to provide a nurturing environment, where young people can grow, learn and develop essential life skills. We aim to offer them opportunities that will not only shape their future, but also make a positive impact on their families, communities and the country as a whole,” said the Fire Chief.
The 40 Fire Cadets successfully completed training in a mixture of challenges and training, including life skills and safety skills.
Next year will mark the 25th anniversary of the Fire Cadet Programme and the 70th anniversary of the Barbados Fire Service.
Alluding to this, Mr. Maynard told the graduates and their families the year would see the introduction of permanent uniforms and participation by the cadets in the Independence parade, and several celebrations. These, he noted, were among a set of goals outlined for the Fire Cadet Programme.
Commending the team which worked with the cadets, he cited the “tireless efforts” of fire officers and instructors and their “genuine passion for youth development” as the “driving force behind the Programme and its success”. Leadership Awards were presented to Fire Cadets Kahisha Gale-Forde; Sarah Griffith; Natalyah Blackman; Alexcia Williams; Dashara Alleyne; Devon Franklyn; Jonas Caddle; Devonte Martin and Jashawn Mayers-Clarke. Devonte Martin also copped the Instructors Trophy.
