There will be no increase in the importation of fish, after significant damage to a large number of fishing vessels caused by the passage of Hurricane Beryl, two weeks ago.

This was stated by Chief Fisheries Officer, Dr. Shelly-Ann Cox, at a recent press conference at the Ministry of the Environment and National Beautification.

Dr. Cox said Barbadians should rest assured that there is no need to import fish even though several fishing boats are out of commission at this time.

“It is the end of the large pelagic season, so at this point the fishing boats would not be very active. They would be hauling up for maintenance. So, it is business as usual. There’s no shortage,” she explained. Dr. Cox also said the fishing season ends around June or July every year.
