Members of the public will have an opportunity to learn more about the Nidhe Israel Synagogue and Museum, Synagogue Lane, The City, on Sunday, February 10, when the Barbados National Trust hosts an Open House.
It will be held from 2:30 until 5:30 p.m. and historian Dr. Karl Watson will make a presentation during the afternoon. There will be the customary admission fee for the public of $30.??
The Division of Culture and Sports has been working with the Trust to sensitise the public and visitors to the island about Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison, and a special effort has been made to include properties within that area in the Trust’s Open House Season.
Historians report that the Jewish Synagogue is situated on the oldest Jewish consecrated ground in the English-speaking Americas. Established in 1654, the Synagogue was the community centre and place of worship for the Jewish population in Barbados. The two oldest tombstones there date from 1658 and may be the oldest known Jewish tombstones in the New World.
