Over 120 persons have already registered for the Sign Language courses on offer by the National Disabilities Unit (NDU).

This was revealed today by its Director, John Hollingsworth, as he spoke with the Barbados Government Information Service, and expressed pleasure that Barbadians are keen on learning the language and helping his Unit’s continued efforts at promoting inclusion of Persons with Disabilities.

“The response has certainly exceeded our expectations,” he said, noting that they were now in search of additional venues to conduct the courses which will start next month and be done at the Basic 1, 2 and Intermediate levels.

Mr. Hollingsworth pointed out that the NDU needed to find the best way to distribute the applicants. “We are in the process of seeking more venues across the island, and we are also looking at how to distribute those who have registered. Our intention is to place those individuals close to their homes and at venues that can accommodate their needs,” he added.

The Sign Language programme will run from September 16 to December 5; it will be conducted on Mondays and Wednesday, or sometimes on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 5.00 to 7.00 p.m.

For further information, the NDU may be contacted at 535-3600 or 535-3604.
