Parents will have a significant role to play in aiding the Ministry of Education to execute its School Teacher Effectiveness Plans (STEPs) this academic year and beyond.

As a starter, and as part of the activities to mark Education Month 2017, the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation will host a Parents’ Forum on Wednesday, October 18, at The St. Michael School, Martindales Road, St. Michael.

The event, which starts at 6:30 p.m., will provide parents with the opportunity to learn about strategies they can employ to assist children with Mathematics, particularly in the completion of homework.

The Parent Forum is a project under the aegis of the Enhancement of School Teacher Effectiveness Component of the Education Sector Enhancement Project II (ESEP II) being undertaken by Government, through the sponsorship of the Caribbean Development Bank.

Facilitators for this important meeting will be the Consulting Team for STEPs from the University of New Brunswick, consisting of Dr. Sherry Rose and David DeCoste.

All parents of primary-aged children are invited to participate in the Parents’ Forum and gain knowledge and insight into the area of the teaching of Maths and to better assist their children.

The main objective of STEPs is to ensure the development and institutionalisation of a school teacher effectiveness strategy for improvements in teacher preparation, school leadership, teaching practice and teacher evaluation.

It is expected that this initiative, when implemented, will result in enhanced planning and the utilisation of student-centred teaching strategies to support more effective classroom instruction.

STEPs, which was officially launched in eight pilot schools this week not only places the focus on principals and teachers, but also seeks to expose parents to the various teaching strategies which can improve student performance in numeracy, literacy and special needs education.

Education Month 2017 is being celebrated under the theme: Firm Foundations= Quality Education.
