CARICOM Chairman, Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, will host another Special Meeting to discuss the COVID-19 pandemic and its effect on the region.
The meeting will take place tomorrow, Wednesday, April 15, at 10:00 a.m. via video conference.
Prime Minister Mottley and fellow CARICOM Heads of Government will be given an update on the impact of COVID-19 on the health sectors and the economies of member states.
They will discuss the possible way forward for greater cooperation in public health, and look at how the region is addressing the crisis.
Ms. Mottley will also be advised about ways of maximizing the regional opportunities within the CARICOM Single Market and Economy to allow the domestic economies to be buffered as much as possible from devastating contraction, in the wake of the pandemic.
The first Special Meeting on COVID-19 was held on Sunday, March 1, with regional leaders also participating via videoconference.
It also brought together Caribbean Ministers of Health and their chief medical officers, representatives from the Pan American Health Organization, the Caribbean Public Health Agency, the Caribbean Community Implementation Agency for Crime and Security, and the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency.
Chief executive officers of cruise lines and airlines servicing the region were also in attendance, along with the private sector, labour, civil society and other interest groups.
A recommendation from the Council for Human and Social Development Working group on regional coordination for management of the virus and other infectious diseases on passenger ships was also discussed.
