I am deeply saddened at the news of the passing, yesterday, of Sir Denys Ambrose Williams, KCMG, GCM. Sir Denys served Barbados and the Caribbean with great distinction.
Returning to the Caribbean in 1949 after his studies in Law in the United Kingdom as a Barbados Scholar, Sir Denys subsequently went on to render legal service to Barbados and the Caribbean, rising to the position of Chief Justice of Barbados in 1986, from which position he retired in 2001 after 34 years of service in the judiciary of Barbados. In 1986, he was knighted by Her Majesty the Queen.??
He was the youngest judge in the Commonwealth at the age of 37, and served in many distinguished capacities throughout his life, including that of Governor General of Barbados on the occasion of the death of Dame Nita Barrow, from December 19, 1995, to June 1, 1996.
Sir Denys lived an exemplary life and gave willing and unselfish service, at all times, to the nation that he loved. I extend my sincerest condolences to his wife, his children, and family members. They can be proud of the enduring legacy that he has left in Barbados. May he rest in peace.
