A new project has been created by the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment to assist Class Four students in transitioning from primary to secondary school.
Project Moving On, which was launched today at the Ministry’s Sky Mall, Haggatt Hall, St. Michael headquarters, has been designed to empower students to have the necessary skills and knowledge to navigate the challenges they may encounter.
And Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment, Charles Griffith, who spoke about the need for the project, said: “Our young people are walking through the fire… walking through a furnace…. This Ministry starts with providing opportunities every step of the way to ensure that your journey is one that is not too hot for you to handle.”
He told the students transitioning from primary to secondary school that they would be exposed to various topics crucial for their personal growth and academic success.
These include effective communication, goal setting, decision making, anger and conflict management, dealing with bullying, and civic responsibility.
Mr. Griffith added that a tracking system would be put in place, and “youth officers would be checking in from time to time to ensure that some of the things that you will learn during the week … will stay with you for a long, long time”.
The pilot phase of Project Moving On will commence in 15 primary schools across the island. It is expected that the project will be eventually introduced in other primary schools.
