Tasty treats and activities for the entire family will be on offer soon, when the Division of Culture in the Prime Minister’s Office hosts the Rock Hall Heritage and International Food Fair at the Freedom Village, St. Thomas.

The event, slated for Saturday, June 17, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., is one of the activities being hosted by the Division to celebrate Heritage Month, which runs until Friday, June 30.

Patrons will be exposed to the rich diversity of Barbados’ cultural heritage through many activities, including displays of traditional cultural practices, such as woodcarvings and Landship manoeuvers.

There will also be talks on bush/heritage medicines; opportunities for genealogy tracing; and the selling of books on Barbadian history and culture. Additionally, displays of local art and craft, and an afro fashion market will be presented.

A highlight of the fair will be the Remember When Corner for the older generation, sponsored by the Ministry of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs.

In this space, the elderly will be interviewed and their stories of growing up in Barbados recorded and used as tools for teaching the youth about Barbados in bygone days and the importance of preserving the country’s cultural heritage. In addition, oral stories of Barbadian communities and an exhibition of artefacts will also be on display.

The National Library Service (NLS) will host a Children’s Corner with traditional Bajan games, paintings, oral stories, puppets and other activities.

In addition, the NLS’ Junior Kadooment Band will be promoted during the event. There will be a limited park and ride service from the St. Thomas Parish Church during the day and along Fire Hill Road, and at the old St. Thomas Outpatients’ Clinic.
