Celebrations in support of the Month of the Disabled 2024 will continue next week with the spotlight on “Rock Your Socks”, an event to mark World Down Syndrome Day on Thursday, March 21, and a movie night.

“Rock Your Socks”, an annual feature of The Down Syndrome Association, will see friends and families of persons living with disabilities buying and wearing their colourful socks to work, school, or play.

Additionally, it is expected that all individuals will take photographs and showcase their socks on the various social media platforms. Those selling the socks are encouraged to donate towards assisting the disabled.

The movie night, on Saturday, March 23, will be held on the grounds of the National Disabilities Unit (NDU) at Maxwelton, Lower Collymore Rock, St. Michael, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. All are invited to bring their chairs and blankets and watch the two movies on show – “Migration” and “The Woman King”.

The month of activities is being coordinated by the NDU and the Barbados Council for the Disabled (BCD), in collaboration with stakeholders. It is being held under the theme One Community: United in Action.

To this end, the upcoming week will be marked by other significant events organised by the BCD, which are aimed at bringing together friends and families of the disabled as well as the general public.

On Sunday, March 17, the Barbados Kidney Association will host its annual walk at the Villages at Coverley, Christ Church. The event, which is being held in tandem with Ross University School of Medicine, will begin and end at the basketball court.

The following day, Monday, March 18, will see the Learning Centre (LC) at Orange Hill, St. James, continuing its draughts competition, while on Tuesday, March 19, there will be a badminton competition. Both start at 9:30 a.m.

The track and field competition for students of the LC comes off on Friday, March 22, from 9:30 a.m., at Standard Playing Field, Orange Hill, St. James

Also, on Saturday, March 23, the BCD will host a meeting at its headquarters at Harambee House, The Garrison, St. Michael, on behalf of the Myasthenia Gravis Association. It takes place at 1:30 p.m. Guest speaker and representative from Sagicor Inc, Nikita McIntosh, will address the topic “Is Your Peace Assured?”.

The week’s activities will culminate with the Everyone is A.B.L.E. event, to be hosted on that same day, and in collaboration with the Kiwanis Club of Barbados, at Kensington Mall Carpark. It starts at 3:00 p.m.

Meanwhile, the public is asked to note that the NDU’s sports rally and the LC’s table tennis competition, both previously scheduled for Wednesday, March 20, will no longer occur.
