World Athletic Championship 400m double bronze medallist and national athlete, Sada Williams, was presented with a cheque for $150,000 from the Government of Barbados today, in recognition of her outstanding athletic efforts.

In addition to the cheque, there was the unveiling of a billboard with Sada at the exit of the Grantley Adams International Airport (GAIA), as well as a life-size cut-out photograph of the bronze medallist at the entrance of the Arrival Hall.

Deputy Prime Minister Santia Bradshaw highlighted that “Bajans” have followed with pride Sada’s journey, especially at the World Athletics Championships, and every time she has represented the island, she has flown the Barbados flag high, “signalling to the world that we remain a small but resourceful and talented nation”.

“I must add that in so doing, you have set the standard to be emulated by our youth. You have given credence to the adage that hard work and dedication redounds to success, an invaluable example not only for our athletes but Barbadians in any area they may choose to pursue,” Minister Bradshaw stated.

She noted that the development of sportspersons to global standards is commensurate with the Government’s strategic plan for sports.

“When the Government of Barbados spoke to elevating sports as a pillar of national identity in our manifesto, it was to occasions such as this that we spoke. It was about recognising the invaluable contribution our athletes make to unifying our people, by providing us with yet another source of inspiration that makes us proud to identify as Barbadian,” the Deputy Prime Minister said.

Ms. Bradshaw lauded Sada for her athletic efforts thus far and said she and the rest of the country look forward to seeing her perform at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Sada is the country’s first athlete to qualify for the Summer Olympic Games.

Speaking after the presentations and unveiling, the 25-year-old athlete shared how she felt about being rewarded. “Well, you know my motto for this season and a big motivation of mine was about getting this money.  So, it is really great …. This was all really wonderful….

“I’m always appreciative of the support that Bajans show. I don’t think that all this would be possible without their love and support and them watching me all the time, so I always love to see them supporting me and showing me love, so keep on doing that,” Sada said.

When asked what her expectations are for the Summer Olympic Games 2024, she said she hopes to be on the podium and to improve her times.
