Six local charities have benefitted from the kind donations of participants of the 2023 Run Tsunami Run 5K Walk and Run.

Director of the Department of Emergency Management (DEM), Kerry Hinds, said that for the first time this year participants were encouraged to donate an item to assist others in communities across the island.

Speaking during the presentation ceremony at the Department’s Warrens, St. Michael headquarters, Ms. Hinds said the participants eagerly provided their donations.

“There was a great outpouring of support,” she said, as she thanked all those who contributed to the cause.

Noting that the original intention was to make a donation to one charity, the Director said, given the response, six charities were chosen to benefit. Those charities were: St. Lucy District Hospital, Farrs Children’s Home, Thelma Vaughn Memorial Home Inc., the Barbados Alliance to End Homelessness, the Battered Women’s Shelter, and Scarred Not Shattered.

Each charity received two to three packed boxes of non-perishable food items to assist with meeting their needs.

The recipients each thanked those who contributed, noting that the donations would go a long way in assisting their clients.

The Run Tsunami Run 5K Walk and Run was the final activity to mark Coastal Hazards and Earthquake Smart Month, celebrated under the theme All Aboard with Coastal Resilience.
