The Florence Springer Memorial Secondary School launched its 60th anniversary celebrations last weekend. To commemorate this historic milestone, a series of events will be held, highlighting the school’s legacy, achievements, and impact over the past six decades.
Celebrations continue tomorrow, Tuesday, October 1, with a Students’ Anniversary Service at 9:30 a.m. at the school, where students will gather to commemorate the official anniversary of the school’s opening and will include speeches and cultural presentations.
Former student and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office with responsibility for Culture, Senator Dr. Shantal Munro-Knight, will deliver the keynote address.
On Wednesday, October 2, at 6:15 p.m., the Pamela J. Tudor lecture will be delivered by Dr. Dawn Chesney-Bynoe, a former student and a member of staff of the school, on the topic STEM: Learning in Today’s Society, in the school’s auditorium.
An Open Day will be hosted at the school on Thursday, October 3, when members of the community are invited to visit. Visitors will have the opportunity to view exhibits and engage with staff and students about the school’s rich history and future vision.
As the penultimate event, the school will celebrate with a ‘Royal Ball’ at The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, on Saturday, October 5. This will be an evening celebrating 60 years of academic excellence and community impact. Alumni, staff, and supporters will gather for a night of elegance, fine dining, and entertainment.
The keynote speaker will be Rev. David Tudor, one of the sons of the school’s first Head Mistress, Pamela J. Tudor. Tickets for this event are available from Marlyn Gittens of Springer’s Old Scholar’s Association, at 262-6013.
The 60th anniversary celebrations will conclude with an ‘excursion’/scenic bus ride on Sunday, October 13, starting at 11:00 a.m. Boarding commences at the Springer School and tickets are available at the school.
