In an effort to hone and develop entrepreneurial skills among residents, the St. George Parish Independence Committee (PIC) will host an Entrepreneurs’ Workshop at Ellerton Community Centre, St. George, this Wednesday, August 22, at 7:00 p.m.

The activity represents a segment of the Parish Project themed: Growing St. George Through Entrepreneurship that will be showcased at the Spirit of the Nation Show on November 17.

Its main objective is to create pathways for residents seeking self-employment opportunities.

Chairman of the St. George Parish Independence Committee, Herbert Harewood, who is expected to welcome workshop participants, explained that the PIC was seeking “to promote business start-up and encourage entrepreneurship at the community level”, and therefore all residents from St. George were invited to attend.

Several institutions will facilitate the initiative. The National Insurance Department will provide information on the contributions self-employed persons are required to pay and benefit entitlement; the Corporate Affairs and Intellectual Property Office will examine the importance of incorporating a company and registering a business; and the TVET Council will address occupational standards and provide a preview of the Caribbean/National Vocational Qualifications (CVQs and NVQs).

The Barbados Youth Business Trust will also offer insights into its business mentoring programme start up loans and grants and provide details for entrepreneurs aged 18 to 35, on how to turn good ideas into successful businesses that can solve youth unemployment.

The Barbados Cultural Industries Development Authority, which is designed to develop the creative industries sector and train creative entrepreneurs, will be in attendance to discuss the criteria used to finance cultural projects and determine eligibility for qualifying for non-repayable grants.
