Students who offered suggestions on how to make Barbadian roads safer were rewarded last month, when the Telecommunications Unit hosted its exhibition and awards ceremony in Heroes Square.

The colouring and caption, poster and bumper sticker, and essay competitions, which were open to children ages five to 16, required participants to address the themes Eliminating the Use of Cellphones while Driving and Barbadian Drivers are Being Distracted by the Use of Technological Devices! What Can Be Done to Eliminate this Unsafe Practice?

Woletta Yaicob and Destiny Sandiford won first place in the colouring and caption competitions, respectively. Zera Yaicob was awarded the top spot in both the poster and bumper sticker competitions; while Emerald Als came out on top in the essay competition.

The exhibition, which was a celebration of World Telecommunications and Information Society Day (WTISD), saw participation from several public and private sector entities, which offered displays for public viewing.

In 2011, the United Nations declared a Decade of Action for Road Safety until the year 2020.
