Residents of Barbados are invited to a series of town hall meetings beginning next Wednesday, November 6, to hear Government’s plans for the establishment of People’s Assemblies, and to share their views on the initiative.

The Thorne Commission on Local Governance, which has been established to guide the process, will host the first meeting at the Graydon Sealy Secondary School, Paddock Road, St. Michael, beginning at 7:00 p.m.

This will be followed by meetings at the Darryl Jordan Secondary School, Trents, St. Lucy, on Wednesday, November 13; the Princess Margaret Secondary School, Six Cross Roads, St. Philip, on Wednesday, November 27, and the West Terrace Primary School, West Terrace, St. James, on Wednesday, December 4.  All meetings will run from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

The People’s Assemblies, which will be community-based, will provide a platform for Barbadians to have a greater say in national affairs.  They will be based on the principle of “patriotic, selfless, non-partisan service to country and fellowman”.

It is proposed that the assemblies be non-partisan, autonomous and not subject to the dictates of any Government Minister.

All interested persons are invited to come out and give their input at the meetings. For more information, persons may contact the Ministry of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs at 535-1600.
