Over 20 canteen concessionaires/vendors will receive training this weekend to aid them in their efforts to present healthier alternatives to school children.

The Ministry of Education, Technological and Vocational Training will be conducting a training session on Saturday, September 2, on the Barbados School Nutrition Policy entitled: Presenting Healthier Alternatives.

It will be held in the Liberal Arts Auditorium of the Barbados Community College from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.

The training is a collaborative effort with the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Barbados and the Barbados Childhood Obesity Prevention Coalition (BCOP).

It is in keeping with the Ministry’s mandate to create healthier food environments at schools, across the island.

During the session, there will be healthy cooking demonstrations and discussions on strategies to employ when purchasing food items.

Participants will also receive the alternative snack and beverage lists and there will be a display of food items that are healthier options, from manufacturers and distributors.

Presenters/facilitators for the training will be Lead Champion of the BCOP, Professor Anne St. John and Deputy Nutrition Officer at the National Nutrition Centre, Brian Payne. Chair of the Barbados School Nutrition Policy Implementation Committee and Education Officer, Hedda Phillips-Boyce will deliver remarks on behalf of the Education Ministry.
