The Urban Development Commission (UDC) will take the spotlight within a few days, when it celebrates its 18th anniversary with a week of activities.

UDC Empowering and Enriching Urban Communities is the theme of the celebrations, which will commence on Sunday, August 16, with a thanksgiving service at Covenant Life Teaching Centre, Green Hill, St. Michael, at 8:30 a.m.

The following day, Monday, August 17, President of the Barbados Town Planning Society, Dr. Yolanda Alleyne, will deliver a public lecture at the Urban Development Commission, Bridge Street Mall, Bridge Street, Bridgetown, beginning at 7:00 p.m. Dr. Alleyne will discuss A New Urban Agenda ??? A Barbadian Context.

A Community Outreach is planned for the Charles F. Broome Special Unit on Wednesday, August 19, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Staff of the UDC will paint classrooms there and assist with a vegetable garden. As part of the outreach, some staffers are currently repairing cupboards at the Erdiston Special School.

The UDC???s mission is ???to provide services and programmes that would assist in the alleviation of poverty, and to enhance the sustainable quality of life and high standards of living within the urban population???.??
