Culture professionals between 18 and 35 years old from the Caribbean are being encouraged to apply for 70 scholarships in creative specialisation courses on offer by the UNESCO Transcultura Programme, in Havana, Cuba.

The Caribbean Cultural Training Hub has announced its sixth call for courses covering topics such as marble; stone conservation and restoration; mural painting; the preservation of heritage archives; the design of small businesses in heritage tourism destinations; and the management of historic centres.

The courses are part of the UNESCO programme, Transcultura: Integrating Cuba, the Caribbean, and the European Union through Culture and Creativity, which is funded by the European Union. 

They will equip participants with the necessary knowledge and skills to fully develop their potential as professionals in the creative and cultural industries.

Persons with nationality and permanent residency in any of the following 17 Caribbean countries should apply: Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago. 

The courses being offered, and their dates and places of study are as follows:

  • Stone conservation and restoration (October 7 to 18, 2024), Workshop School of Havana ‘Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos’.
  • Marble, terrazzo and marble mosaic work (October 7 to November 1, 2024), Workshop School of Havana ‘Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos’.
  • Brick Vaults (October 7 to November 1, 2024), Workshop School of Havana ‘Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos’.
  • Walls that speak – conservation and restoration of mural painting (October 7 to 18, 2024), Santa Clara College for Training in the Arts and Restoration Trades of Cuba and the Caribbean.
  • Preservation of Heritage Archives (October 14 to 25, 2024), Santa Clara College for Training in the Arts and Restoration Trades of Cuba and the Caribbean.
  • The design of small businesses in heritage tourism destinations (October 14 to 25, 2024), University College of San Gerónimo de La Habana.
  • Introduction to the management of historic centres (October 14 to 25, 2024), University College of San Gerónimo de La Habana.
