Statement From The Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment on the National Stadium Redevelopment Project

Following a recent Nation newspaper article and subsequent queries, the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment wishes to update the public on the redevelopment of the National Stadium, since the headline may have been misleading.

The redevelopment of the National Stadium is being supported through grant funding by the People’s Republic of China. Phase 1 includes the provision of the Western Stand to seat 10,000 persons along with the necessary amenities. It also includes a 400-metre competition track and field events area.

Phase 2 of the project entails the provision of an Eastern Stand with a capacity of an additional 10,000 seats and a 400-metre warm up track on the site of the former Barbados Lumber Company. While the warm-up track is scheduled for Phase 2, it will be built simultaneously during Phase 1, as this is an accreditation requirement for the new National Stadium.

Over the period following signed Letters of Intent and the Implementation Agreement respectively, the parties have been working assiduously to ensure that the design of the National Stadium meets the regulatory requirements of Barbados. This was followed by the review and signing of the Design Development Documents by the Government of Barbados, which is a procedural requirement for the China Architecture Design and Research Group Company Ltd. and CIECC Engineering Company Ltd.

The signing on July 30th, 2024 triggered the preparation of the construction drawings to be delivered eight weeks, thereafter. Following receipt, the Barbadian team will review and approve the construction drawings, which will be used to inform the tendering process and identification of the general contractor in China.

Following the completion of the aforementioned processes, Barbadians will begin to see construction activity surrounding the National Stadium site.
