Barbadians will have an opportunity to learn more about the International System of Units (SI), commonly known as the metric system, on Thursday, May 25, during an awareness seminar.

The Barbados National Standards Institution will host the seminar, which will be held virtually, from 10:00 a.m. to noon.  Persons may click here to register.

Participants will include manufacturers, retailers, vendors, consumers and organisations with an interest in traceable measurement.  They will learn about SI; how to convert from pounds to kilogrammes; verification of scales and measuring instruments used in trade, and the benefits of the new Metrology Act.

This initiative is in celebration of World Metrology Day, which is observed annually on May 20.  This year’s theme is: Measurements Supporting the Global Food System.

Barbados’ legislation has been upgraded to facilitate the transition from the imperial to the metric measurement system under the new Metrology Act.

This change means that measurement will be based on SI, where measurement in inches, feet, yards, miles, pounds, etcetera, for trade and business, will be phased out eventually.
