The Barbados Water Authority (BWA), in partnership with the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC), is launching a series of community meetings as part of the Water Sector Resilience Nexus for Sustainability in Barbados (WSRN S-Barbados) project.

The first meeting will take place on Thursday, September 12, at St. John Parish Church, Church View, St. John, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.

The meetings aim to educate the public about the critical link between water conservation and energy savings, empowering residents to adopt sustainable practices that contribute to a more resilient Barbados. Through these meetings, the goal is to inspire action at the community level, ensuring that the public understands the role it can play in building a sustainable future.

The series will continue throughout September, with meetings all beginning at 6:00 p.m. These are:

  • Monday, September 16 – St. Philip Parish Church
  • Tuesday, September 17 – St. Thomas Parish Church
  • Wednesday, September 18 – St. Andrew Parish Church
  • Thursday, September 19 – St. James Parish Church
  • Friday, September 20 – St. Leonard’s Anglican Church, St. Michael
  • Tuesday, September 24 – St. Ann’s Anglican Church, St Joseph

  • Monday, September 30 – St. George Parish Church

The BWA, through the CCCCC, was approved for a grant from the Green Climate Fund (GCF) for the proposal titled: “Water Sector Resilience Nexus for Sustainability in Barbados (WSRN S-Barbados)”.

Its aim is to transform Barbados’ society into one that is more aware of the water cycle and climate change impacts threatening the island’s drinking water supply; create resilience to severe weather impacts; reduce greenhouse gas emissions; reduce consumption and promote appropriate uses of diverse water sources and legislation to support climate-smart development and water sector resilience.

As part of its support of Government and water establishments in the continuous efforts to effectively manage and coordinate water resources in conservation, the CCCCC aims to raise public awareness of the importance of public water and energy conservation and demonstrate how the WSRN S-Barbados project assists with increasing resilience in these sectors.

The outreach and awareness campaign will be aimed at spreading the key messages and promoting behaviour change regarding the importance of the water-energy nexus, including the role of natural gas microturbines; the link between gender and energy, and enhancing knowledge on the installation and maintenance of the Personal Tank Programme (PTP) and Rainwater Harvesting (RwH) systems, through 23 community workshops.
