A call for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) to register with the National Disabilities Unit in order to benefit from the National Insurance Scheme, has been met with great response by this grouping.

This was divulged by Minister of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs, Kirk Humphrey today as he addressed the graduation ceremony, at the Barbados Yacht Club, Bay Street, for 30 special needs children, who successfully undertook the Barbados Secondary Schools Entrance Examination 2024.

The Minister told those gathered that Government was extending the categories of persons with disabilities (PWDs), who could access disability benefits through the National Insurance Scheme and having placed an advertisement in the media has already realised a significant response.

He noted this was extended to persons with down syndrome, autism, cerebral palsy and multiple sclerosis and to date 350 persons had come forward and registered.

The Elder Affairs Minister stated: “I think that is good because it means 350 more people are likely to be able to access benefits that they previously could not access.  And it allows parents to be able to live; And, it allows children with disabilities also to be able to live and these are the real things.

“But I also want to take this opportunity to encourage other persons who have any other disability to come forward and register so that we will have you on a database as we try to make life better for all”.

PWDs or their caregivers may collect the forms for registering at the NDU’s headquarters at Maxwelton, Lower Collymore Rock, St. Michael. Such persons may also call 535-3613 or 266-5013, for further information.

In addition, a WhatsApp message may be sent to 266-5013 or an email may be issued to disabilities.unit@barbados.gov.bb, requesting the link to complete the registration form online.

Registration will assist the Ministry of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs to determine eligibility to benefit from the expansion of national insurance grants for these categories of persons with disabilities.

All PWDs must register before August 9, to facilitate the commencement of benefits from October 2024.
